Mr. Mayor Liu Qi

Beijing Municipal Government

Beijing, China

Dear Liu Qi,

Greetings from Greenpeace! We are glad to learn, from International Olympic Committee (IOC), that Beijing is bidding to host the Olympic Game in the year 2008.

Greenpeace is an independent organization campaigning to ensure a just, peaceful, sustainable environment for future generations. We began in Canada in 1971 and today have a presence in more than 40 countries with 2.4 million supports worldwide.

As an international environmental organization, we are especially pleased to know that Beijing is striving for a Green Olympic Game. We believe that this event will help Beijing and its people to achieve their goal for a cleaner and greener environment.

Greenpeace has been involving in Olympic events for a number of years. When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced, in Monte Carlo in 1993, that Sydney had won the right to host the 2000 Olympics, Greenpeace was there to help promote the city's unique environmental approach.

Greenpeace continues to be involved in all environmental aspects of the Sydney Olympics and has played an important watchdog role to ensure that early-day promises have become latter-day realities. We have worked with Olympic officials in Sydney and internationally, with companies hoping to meet the Environmental Guidelines, with other bid-cities around the world and with communities interested in the environmental lessons learned from the Sydney Olympics.

Once again, we at Greenpeace, are extending our sincere support for the success of Beijing’s effort to bid for a Green Olympic Game in the year 2008.

Best Regards,

Sincerely yours,

Greenpeace
